In short (tl;dr)
A 20-year money back plan. It returns 20% of the sum assured at the five, ten and fifteen year marks, and the full sum assured stays at risk throughout.
Worked example: at 30, ₹5,00,000 of cover over 20 years costs ₹38,342 a year for 15 years and is projected to pay ₹6,65,000 at maturity, a return of 5.55% a year.
What is LIC New Money Back Plan - 20 Years?
The New Money Back Plan - 20 Years (Plan 720) runs for a fixed 20-year term with premiums payable for 15. At the end of the 5th, 10th and 15th policy years it returns 20% of the Basic Sum Assured. The remaining 40%, plus every rupee of vested bonus and the Final Additional Bonus, is paid at maturity.
The feature people miss is that the death benefit never reduces. Even after all three survival payouts have been taken, a death claim still pays the full Sum Assured on Death plus bonuses. The money you have already received is not deducted. That is what distinguishes a money back policy from simply withdrawing from a savings plan.
Bonuses also accrue on the full Basic Sum Assured for all 20 years, not on the declining balance. This is why the maturity value of a money back plan looks larger than the 40% residual suggests.
Key features
- 20% of the sum assured returned at the end of years 5, 10 and 15
- Premiums payable for 15 years against a 20-year term
- Death benefit stays at the full sum assured even after survival payouts
- Bonus accrues on the full sum assured for the whole 20 years
- Participating, with Final Additional Bonus payable at maturity

Is it 720, 920 or 820?
This plan is 720 with UIN 512N280V03. The V03 is a version marker: this is the third version. Plan 820 (UIN 512N280V01) was withdrawn on 1 February 2020, as LIC's own page for it records, and Plan 920 (UIN 512N280V02) took its place, as its LIC sales brochure records. If 920 or 820 is what your policy document says, that document governs your policy; a later version does not change the terms yours was sold on.
What are the benefits of LIC New Money Back Plan - 20 Years?
What does LIC New Money Back Plan - 20 Years pay on death?
Sum Assured on Death, meaning the higher of 125% of the Basic Sum Assured and 10 times the annualised premium and never less than 105% of premiums paid, plus vested bonuses and Final Additional Bonus. Survival benefits already paid are not deducted.
What do you get at maturity?
40% of the Basic Sum Assured plus vested simple reversionary bonuses on the full sum assured plus Final Additional Bonus.
Who is LIC New Money Back Plan - 20 Years for?
Someone with recurring five-yearly commitments, such as school transitions, vehicle replacement or a periodic family expense, who wants the policy to fund them.
What should you watch out for?
A money back plan costs more per ₹1000 than a plain endowment because LIC is paying you back early and still carrying the full risk. If you do not actually need the interim cash, an endowment usually matures higher.
What does LIC New Money Back Plan - 20 Years cost?
Worked out on a 20-year term with premiums paid for 15 years. Change any of these in the calculator above for your own figures.
By sum assured, at age 30
| Sum assured | Premium a year | Total paid in | Projected maturity |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹5,00,000 | ₹38,342 | ₹5,75,137 | ₹6,65,000 |
| ₹10,00,000 | ₹76,685 | ₹11,50,275 | ₹13,30,000 |
| ₹25,00,000 | ₹1,91,712 | ₹28,75,687 | ₹33,25,000 |
Premiums are modelled on this plan's own tabular rates; the maturity figure assumes LIC's current bonus rates hold for the full term, which is not guaranteed.
By age, on ₹5,00,000 of cover
Sum assured moves the premium almost in a straight line, so the table above is easy to read across. Age does not, and it is the input people most often want to test before filling anything in.
| Age at entry | Premium a year | Total paid in | Projected maturity | Age when it pays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 years | ₹38,271 | ₹5,74,063 | ₹6,65,000 | 45 |
| 30 years | ₹38,342 | ₹5,75,137 | ₹6,65,000 | 50 |
| 40 years | ₹38,867 | ₹5,83,010 | ₹6,65,000 | 60 |
| 50 years | ₹40,607 | ₹6,09,104 | ₹6,65,000 | 70 |
The premium barely moves across the rows. Mortality is a small part of a savings premium and the savings part is the same at any age. What age changes is the last column: when the money arrives, and how old you are when it does.
LIC's own sample premium, from the brochure
From the sourceNot modelled: this is the table LIC prints in its own brochure (Sales brochure, section 6 Sample Illustrative Premium), at ₹2,00,000 of cover, the sum assured LIC chose to illustrate. Everywhere else on this page the premium is worked out for the sum assured you enter; here it is fixed at that figure, because that is what LIC published.
These figures are taken from the document linked below. Check them there.
| Age at entry | 15 years |
|---|---|
| 20 | ₹15,896 |
| 30 | ₹16,082 |
| 40 | ₹16,846 |

Where the maturity figure comes from
Taken apart, on the ₹5,00,000 policy in the first table. Only the first line is guaranteed by the contract. Everything under it is bonus, declared a year at a time and assumed here to carry on at the rate this page uses.
- Basic sum assured (guaranteed)
- ₹2,00,000
- Vested reversionary bonus, 20 years at ₹42 per ₹1,000
- ₹4,20,000
- Final Additional Bonus, ₹90 per ₹1,000
- ₹45,000
- Paid at maturity
- ₹6,65,000
- Income paid before then, 3 payments of ₹1,00,000 from year 5
- ₹3,00,000
- Return a year on the premiums, if the bonus rate holds
- 5.55%
When does LIC New Money Back Plan - 20 Years pay for itself?
The grey line is what you have paid in by each policy year. The yellow line is what the policy has paid back by then. They cross in year 20, which is the point the policy has returned everything it cost.
That return counts everything the policy pays back, income included, against everything you put in, after the cost of the life cover it carried for 20 years. It is not a market return. Change the bonus rate and it changes with it.

Surrender value, paid-up value and loan
A 20-year commitment is a long one, and the question that follows a premium quote is usually what happens if you stop. Under the IRDAI rules in force since 1 October 2024, New Money Back Plan - 20 Years can be surrendered once the first policy year is complete and one full year's premium has been paid. Stop before that and the policy lapses with nothing to show for it.
From then you are paid the higher of two figures. The special surrender value, what the reduced, paid-up policy is worth today rather than at maturity, is available from the end of the first year. The guaranteed surrender value needs two full years' premiums, and is a percentage of the total premiums paid, first year included: 30% in year 2, 35% in year 3, 50% from year 4 to year 7, then rising to 90% in the last two years. Which of the two comes out higher changes with duration, so the last column below is the one to read.
| Years paid | Total paid in | Guaranteed value | Special value | You would get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | ₹38,342 | ₹0 | ₹11,763 | ₹11,763 |
| 2 years | ₹76,685 | ₹23,005 | ₹25,525 | ₹25,525 |
| 3 years | ₹1,15,027 | ₹50,478 | ₹41,542 | ₹50,478 |
| 5 years | ₹1,91,712 | ₹1,13,738 | ₹81,506 | ₹1,13,738 |
| 10 years | ₹3,83,425 | ₹2,58,605 | ₹2,45,115 | ₹2,58,605 |
| 15 years | ₹5,75,137 | ₹4,71,865 | ₹5,52,852 | ₹5,52,852 |
On the ₹5,00,000 policy from the tables above, at age 30. Held to maturity the same policy is projected to pay ₹6,65,000, which is the number to read every row here against. Surrender values are modelled on the IRDAI 2024 basis, using the guaranteed surrender value grid printed in the New Jeevan Anand (715) brochure; a policy sold before 1 October 2024 runs on the older rules in its own document, and your own policy schedule is what governs.
Paid-up value: the other way to stop
You do not have to take the money out. Stop paying after at least one full year's premium and the policy continues at a reduced sum assured instead, keeping the cover and the bonuses already vested. The reduction is worked on the premium paying term, not the policy term, which is the point most calculators get wrong: on this policy the denominator is 15, so 8 years paid out of 15 leaves 53% of the sum assured standing, plus the bonus already vested.
Loan against the policy
Once the policy has a surrender value it can also be borrowed against, which is worth knowing before you surrender in a hurry. LIC lends a percentage of the surrender value rather than of the sum assured, and sets a different percentage for an in-force policy and a paid-up one. Those percentages sit in the policy conditions, so ask your servicing branch for the figure that applies to yours. On New Jeevan Anand (715), for example, the brochure allows 50% of the surrender value before two full years' premiums and 75% after, or 40% and 65% on a paid-up policy.
To run these figures on your own policy, use the LIC surrender value calculator, which takes the premium and the years paid off your own policy document. If you are weighing it up rather than pricing it, we have written about whether surrendering an LIC policy is worth it.
Tax on LIC New Money Back Plan - 20 Years
Two provisions do the work, and both turn on the size of the premium rather than on the plan. The Income-tax Act, 2025 renumbered both from 1 April 2026 without changing the rules, so each is given here under its old number and its new one.
Section 80C, now Section 123, on what you pay in
Premiums count towards the ₹1.5 lakh limit, in the year they are paid, if you are on the old regime. The deduction is restricted where the annual premium is more than 10% of the sum assured.
Section 10(10D), now Schedule II, on what comes back
Maturity proceeds are exempt where the premium in every year stays inside 10% of the sum assured, and, for a policy issued on or after 1 April 2023, where the premiums on all such policies together stay inside ₹5 lakh a year. Death proceeds are exempt either way.
Where this policy sits
The ₹5,00,000 policy priced above costs ₹38,342 a year, which is 7.7% of the sum assured. That is inside the 10% test, on both provisions. A larger sum assured moves the ratio down.
GST
Nil. Individual life insurance premiums have been exempt since 22 September 2025, so the instalment the calculator shows is the amount that leaves your account.
None of this is tax advice. Which regime you are on, what else you hold and when the policy was issued all change the answer, so confirm your own position with a tax adviser before you rely on it.
How this calculator works
New Money Back Plan - 20 Years is priced here on its own parameters, not a generic formula. We build the plan's full cash-flow schedule, meaning the death benefit in each policy year, every survival payout and the maturity value, then discount it on a basis calibrated to a reference premium for this plan. That reference is checked two ways: against LIC's published tabular rate, and against the return the plan's own benefits imply for the policyholder.
- Reference premium
- ₹80.75 per ₹1,000 at age 30, 20-year term, 15-year premium term
- Discount basis
- 6.74% a year, on LIC (2012-14) Ultimate mortality
- Reversionary bonus
- ₹42 per ₹1,000 sum assured a year, believed to be LIC's 2023-24 rate for this term; we have not found an LIC document that publishes it. Later declarations, which pay higher rates on larger sums assured, are not reflected, so the figure may be low.
- Final Additional Bonus
- ₹90 per ₹1,000 at a 20-year term
- GST
- Nil. Individual life insurance premiums have been exempt from GST since 22 September 2025, so the instalments shown are what you actually pay.
Bonus rates are declared annually and are not guaranteed; only the sum assured and any contractual guaranteed additions are. Read our editorial and methodology policyfor the full basis, and confirm every figure with LIC before you buy.

What this premium does not include
The figure above is the premium for the base policy. LIC allows 3 optional riders on New Money Back Plan - 20 Years, each a separate contract with its own sum assured, term and premium. Take one and you pay more than the figure above, and the base premium itself does not change.
- LIC's Accidental Death and Disability Benefit Rider (AD & DB Rider)UIN 512B209V02
- LIC's Accident Benefit Rider (AB Rider)UIN 512B203V03
- LIC's New Term Assurance Rider (Term Rider)UIN 512B210V02
Premiums for all the life insurance riders put together cannot exceed 30% of the premium under the base plan. That cap is the useful number to hold an agent to: whatever riders are proposed, the total should stay inside it.
What they cost
On the ₹5,00,000 policy priced above, at age 30. Each cover rider is quoted here for the same ₹5,00,000 of rider cover, or its own ceiling if that is lower; the premium waiver rider is quoted against the base premium it would waive. The plan brochure does not print these rates, so they come from each rider's own brochure instead.
| Rider | Quoted on | Premium a year |
|---|---|---|
| AD & DB RiderAccidental death and disability | ₹5,00,000of rider cover | ₹600interpolated |
| AB RiderAccidental death cover | ₹5,00,000of rider cover | ₹250LIC's stated rate |
| Term RiderExtra life cover | ₹5,00,000of rider cover | ₹1,535interpolated |
Priced on the limited premium basis, because that is how New Money Back Plan - 20 Years is paid for. LIC prints a separate rate table for each basis, and the same rider costs materially more on a limited premium policy than on a regular premium one. Where LIC publishes a sample grid rather than a rate for every age and term, the figure between grid points is interpolated and marked as such above. The 30% cap works out at ₹11,503 a year on this policy.
Tick a rider in the calculator above and enter the cover you want, and the result page prices it on your own age, term and sum assured rather than on this reference policy.

LIC New Money Back Plan - 20 Years: frequently asked questions
How much do I get back in LIC's 20-year money back plan?
20% of the Basic Sum Assured at the end of the 5th, 10th and 15th policy years, then 40% plus all bonuses at maturity. On a ₹5 lakh sum assured that is ₹1 lakh three times, then ₹2 lakh plus bonuses.
Does the death benefit reduce after money back payments?
No. The full Sum Assured on Death plus bonuses is payable on a death claim at any time during the term, regardless of how many survival benefits have already been paid out.
What is the premium paying term for Plan 720?
15 years, against a policy term of 20. The last five years are cover and bonus accrual with no premiums due.
Is the money back amount taxable?
Survival benefits and maturity proceeds are exempt under Section 10(10D) (Schedule II of the Income-tax Act, 2025) provided the annual premium stays within 10% of the sum assured, and for policies issued on or after 1 April 2023, provided total annual premiums across your non-ULIP policies do not exceed ₹5 lakh.
Which is better, the 20-year or the 25-year money back plan?
The 25-year plan (Plan 721) pays 15% four times instead of 20% three times, runs five years longer and carries a higher bonus rate, so it usually projects a larger total return. The 20-year plan gets your money moving sooner and has a lower maximum entry age of 50.
