In short (tl;dr)
New Jeevan Amar is the agent-sold version of LIC's term cover, with a lower ₹25 lakh entry point and the same benefit structure as New Tech-Term.
Worked example: at 30, ₹25,00,000 of cover over 20 years costs ₹4,500 a year for 20 years.
What is LIC New Jeevan Amar?
New Jeevan Amar (Plan 955) is a non-linked, non-participating pure protection plan sold through LIC's agency network. The benefit design mirrors New Tech-Term: Level or Increasing Sum Assured, smoker and non-smoker rates, regular, limited or single premium.
The differences are commercial rather than structural. The minimum sum assured is ₹25 lakh rather than ₹50 lakh, which opens it to buyers who want less cover, and the premium is a little higher because it carries agent commission.
For most buyers the choice comes down to whether they want a person to handle the paperwork and the eventual claim. That service has a price, and this plan is where it shows up.
Key features
- Minimum sum assured ₹25 lakh — lower than New Tech-Term's ₹50 lakh
- Sold through LIC agents, with in-person help at proposal and claim
- Level or Increasing Sum Assured options
- Separate smoker and non-smoker rates; lower rates for female lives
- Regular, limited or single premium payment options

What are the benefits of LIC New Jeevan Amar?
What does LIC New Jeevan Amar pay on death?
The Sum Assured on Death, paid as a lump sum — the higher of 7 times the annualised premium and the absolute amount assured, never less than 105% of premiums paid.
What do you get at maturity?
None. Pure protection, with no maturity value and no surrender value on regular premium policies.
Who is LIC New Jeevan Amar for?
Someone who wants LIC term cover but prefers to buy through an agent, or who needs less than the ₹50 lakh minimum that Tech-Term imposes.
What should you watch out for?
It costs a good deal more than New Tech-Term for the same cover. LIC's own brochures print ₹7,830 a year for ₹50 lakh at age 30 over 20 years here, against ₹9,135 for twice the cover on Tech-Term; at 30 over 30 years this site's model puts it about 40% above Tech-Term at ₹50 lakh and ₹1 crore and 56% at ₹2 crore. LIC has also withdrawn the plan, so this page is for valuing a policy already held.
What does LIC New Jeevan Amar cost?
Worked out on a 20-year term with premiums paid for 20 years, for a non-smoking man. Change any of these in the calculator above for your own figures.
By sum assured, at age 30
| Sum assured | Premium a year | Total paid in |
|---|---|---|
| ₹25,00,000 | ₹4,500 | ₹90,000 |
| ₹50,00,000 | ₹7,830 | ₹1,56,600 |
| ₹1,25,00,000 | ₹16,875 | ₹3,37,500 |
Premiums are modelled on this plan's own tabular rates. This is a pure protection plan, so there is no maturity value.
By age, on ₹25,00,000 of cover
Sum assured moves the premium almost in a straight line, so the table above is easy to read across. Age does not, and it is the input people most often want to test before filling anything in.
| Age at entry | Premium a year | Total paid in |
|---|---|---|
| 25 years | ₹3,906 | ₹78,126 |
| 30 years | ₹4,500 | ₹90,000 |
| 40 years | ₹8,765 | ₹1,75,295 |
| 50 years | ₹22,672 | ₹4,53,433 |
Age moves this premium a long way: ₹3,906 at 25 becomes ₹22,672 at 50, 5.8 times as much. Most of it pays for the risk of dying during the term, and that risk climbs with age.
LIC's own sample premium, from the brochure
From the sourceNot modelled: this is the table LIC prints in its own brochure (Sales brochure, Sample Illustrative Premium, Option I Level Sum Assured, non-smoker male; regular and limited (term minus 5, minus 10)), at ₹50,00,000 of cover, the sum assured LIC chose to illustrate. Everywhere else on this page the premium is worked out for the sum assured you enter; here it is fixed at that figure, because that is what LIC published.

Tax on LIC New Jeevan Amar
Two provisions do the work, and both turn on the size of the premium rather than on the plan. The Income-tax Act, 2025 renumbered both from 1 April 2026 without changing the rules, so each is given here under its old number and its new one.
Section 80C, now Section 123, on what you pay in
Premiums count towards the ₹1.5 lakh limit, in the year they are paid, if you are on the old regime. The deduction is restricted where the annual premium is more than 10% of the sum assured.
Section 10(10D), now Schedule II, on what comes back
Maturity proceeds are exempt where the premium in every year stays inside 10% of the sum assured, and, for a policy issued on or after 1 April 2023, where the premiums on all such policies together stay inside ₹5 lakh a year. Death proceeds are exempt either way.
Where this policy sits
The ₹25,00,000 policy priced above costs ₹4,500 a year, which is 0.2% of the sum assured. That is inside the 10% test, on both provisions. A larger sum assured moves the ratio down.
GST
Nil. Individual life insurance premiums have been exempt since 22 September 2025, so the instalment the calculator shows is the amount that leaves your account.
None of this is tax advice. Which regime you are on, what else you hold and when the policy was issued all change the answer, so confirm your own position with a tax adviser before you rely on it.
How this calculator works
New Jeevan Amar is priced here on its own parameters, not a generic formula. We build the plan's full cash-flow schedule, meaning the death benefit in each policy year, every survival payout and the maturity value, then discount it on a basis calibrated to a reference premium for this plan. That reference is checked two ways: against LIC's published tabular rate, and against the return the plan's own benefits imply for the policyholder.
- Reference premium
- ₹1.80 per ₹1,000 at age 30, 20-year term, 20-year premium term
- Discount basis
- 8.82% a year, on LIC (2012-14) Ultimate mortality scaled to 150% for this plan's underwritten pool
- GST
- Nil. Individual life insurance premiums have been exempt from GST since 22 September 2025, so the instalments shown are what you actually pay.
Bonus rates are declared annually and are not guaranteed; only the sum assured and any contractual guaranteed additions are. Read our editorial and methodology policyfor the full basis, and confirm every figure with LIC before you buy.

What this premium does not include
The figure above is the premium for the base policy. LIC allows one optional rider on New Jeevan Amar, each a separate contract with its own sum assured, term and premium. Take one and you pay more than the figure above, and the base premium itself does not change.
- LIC's Accident Benefit Rider (AB Rider)UIN 512B203V03
Premiums for all the life insurance riders put together cannot exceed 30% of the premium under the base plan. That cap is the useful number to hold an agent to: whatever riders are proposed, the total should stay inside it.
What they cost
On the ₹25,00,000 policy priced above, at age 30. Each cover rider is quoted here for the same ₹25,00,000 of rider cover, or its own ceiling if that is lower; the premium waiver rider is quoted against the base premium it would waive. The plan brochure does not print these rates, so they come from each rider's own brochure instead.
| Rider | Quoted on | Premium a year |
|---|---|---|
| AB RiderAccidental death cover | ₹25,00,000of rider cover | ₹1,250LIC's stated rate |
Priced on the regular premium basis, because that is how New Jeevan Amar is paid for. LIC prints a separate rate table for each basis, and the same rider costs materially more on a limited premium policy than on a regular premium one. The 30% cap works out at ₹1,350 a year on this policy.
Tick a rider in the calculator above and enter the cover you want, and the result page prices it on your own age, term and sum assured rather than on this reference policy.

LIC New Jeevan Amar: frequently asked questions
Is New Jeevan Amar more expensive than New Tech-Term?
Yes, typically by 10 to 15%, because it is sold through agents and the premium carries commission. The benefits are otherwise the same.
What is the minimum sum assured for New Jeevan Amar?
₹25,00,000, against ₹50,00,000 for the online New Tech-Term. That lower floor is the main reason to prefer it if you want a modest amount of cover.
What is the Increasing Sum Assured option?
The cover stays level for the first five policy years, then rises by 10% of the original sum assured each year from the sixth to the fifteenth, stopping at twice the original amount. It tracks a growing income and rising family responsibilities.
Can I convert New Jeevan Amar into a savings plan later?
No. Term plans cannot be converted. If your needs change you would buy a separate savings policy alongside, and keep the term cover running for the protection it provides.
