In short (tl;dr)
Jeevan Umang turns a limited premium term into a lifelong 8% annual income, with the sum assured and all bonuses paid at age 100 or on death, whichever comes first.
Worked example: at 30, ₹5,00,000 of cover costs ₹26,967 a year for 20 years, then pays ₹40,000 every year for life from policy year 20, a return of 5.35% a year.
What is LIC Jeevan Umang?
Jeevan Umang (Plan 745) is a whole life plan that matures at age 100. You choose a premium paying term of 15, 20, 25 or 30 years; the policy term is whatever remains until you turn 100. Entry age runs from 90 days to 55.
From the end of the premium paying term until age 99, the policy pays a Survival Benefit of 8% of the Basic Sum Assured every single year. A ₹10 lakh policy taken at 30 with a 20-year premium term starts paying ₹80,000 a year from age 50 and keeps paying it for fifty years. At 100, the Basic Sum Assured plus all vested bonuses and Final Additional Bonus is paid as the maturity benefit.
Over a long life the income stream dwarfs the maturity value, which is what makes the plan hard to compare with an ordinary endowment. The projection below adds up every survival payment so you can see the total, but remember that ₹80,000 received in 2075 is not worth ₹80,000 today.
Key features
- 8% of the Basic Sum Assured paid every year from the end of the premium term to age 99
- Premium paying terms of 15, 20, 25 or 30 years
- Life cover continues to age 100
- Participating: bonuses accrue over the whole policy term and are paid at maturity or on death
- Entry age from 90 days, so it can be set up on a child's life
When does the Jeevan Umang income start, and how much is it?
How long you pay for sets two things at once: what each premium costs, and the policy year the income starts. Worked at age 30 on ₹5,00,000 of cover, so the rows differ by that choice and nothing else.
| You pay for | Premium a year | Total paid in | Additions accrued | Income starts | Income a year | Paid out by 85 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 years | ₹40,469 | ₹6,07,033 | ₹0 | Year 15at age 45 | ₹40,000 | ₹16,40,000 |
| 20 years | ₹26,967 | ₹5,39,343 | ₹0 | Year 20at age 50 | ₹40,000 | ₹14,40,000 |
| 25 years | ₹19,319 | ₹4,82,986 | ₹0 | Year 25at age 55 | ₹40,000 | ₹12,40,000 |
| 30 years | ₹14,596 | ₹4,37,872 | ₹0 | Year 30at age 60 | ₹40,000 | ₹10,40,000 |
The income itself never changes: it is 8% of the Basic Sum Assured every year for life, ₹40,000 on this policy, whichever row you pick. What the choice buys is the starting year, and the last column is what that is worth if the life assured reaches 85. Payments carry on past 85 for as long as the life assured lives; the column stops there only so the rows can be compared on one horizon.
The row that starts paying soonest is also the row with the highest total paid in, not the lowest: 15 years comes to ₹6,07,033 in total against ₹4,37,872 for 30 years, because starting 15 years sooner means that many more years of the same income to fund. A lower annual premium and a lower total cost do not have to point the same way.
Worked as a return on the actual cash flows, premiums out, income and maturity in, the rows sit close together: 5.30% to 5.39% a year. None of them is 8%. That figure is a fixed share of the sum assured, not a return on what you pay, and the real annualised return sits well below it whichever row is chosen.

Is it 745 or 945?
LIC's own page gives this plan as 745 with UIN 512N312V03, and that is where both come from here. The V03 on the end of the UIN is a version marker: LIC withdrew the second version, Plan 945 (UIN 512N312V02), on 1 October 2024 and replaced it with this one on the same day. If 945 is what your policy document says, that document is the one that governs; a later version does not change the terms yours was sold on.
What are the benefits of LIC Jeevan Umang?
What does LIC Jeevan Umang pay on death?
Sum Assured on Death, the higher of 7 times the annualised premium and 125% of the Basic Sum Assured, never less than 105% of premiums paid, plus vested bonuses and Final Additional Bonus, payable whenever death occurs.
What do you get at maturity?
The Basic Sum Assured plus vested simple reversionary bonuses plus Final Additional Bonus, payable on survival to age 100, after a lifetime of annual survival benefits.
Who is LIC Jeevan Umang for?
Someone who wants a lifelong income floor they cannot outlive, funded during their working years, with a legacy amount left over.
What should you watch out for?
The 8% is 8% of the sum assured, not 8% a year on the money you put in. Compare the income against the total premium outlay, and remember the income is level: it does not rise with inflation over a fifty-year run.
What does LIC Jeevan Umang cost?
Worked out on a 70-year term with premiums paid for 20 years. Change any of these in the calculator above for your own figures.
By sum assured, at age 30
| Sum assured | Premium a year | Total paid in | Projected maturity |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹5,00,000 | ₹26,967 | ₹5,39,343 | ₹33,10,000 |
| ₹10,00,000 | ₹52,954 | ₹10,59,086 | ₹66,20,000 |
| ₹25,00,000 | ₹1,32,386 | ₹26,47,715 | ₹1,65,50,000 |
Premiums are modelled on this plan's own tabular rates; the maturity figure assumes LIC's current bonus rates hold for the full term, which is not guaranteed.
By age, on ₹5,00,000 of cover
Sum assured moves the premium almost in a straight line, so the table above is easy to read across. Age does not, and it is the input people most often want to test before filling anything in.
| Age at entry | Premium a year | Total paid in | Income for life | Projected maturity | Age when it pays |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 years | ₹26,249 | ₹5,24,978 | ₹22,00,000 | ₹34,25,000 | 100 |
| 30 years | ₹26,967 | ₹5,39,343 | ₹20,00,000 | ₹33,10,000 | 100 |
| 40 years | ₹28,679 | ₹5,73,574 | ₹16,00,000 | ₹30,80,000 | 100 |
| 50 years | ₹31,021 | ₹6,20,421 | ₹12,00,000 | ₹28,10,000 | 100 |
The premium barely moves across the rows. Mortality is a small part of a savings premium and the savings part is the same at any age. What age changes is the income column: the payment is the same every year, so starting younger simply means collecting it for longer.

From the sourceNot modelled: this is the table LIC prints in its own brochure (Sales brochure, section 6 Sample Illustrative Premium), at ₹2,00,000 of cover, the sum assured LIC chose to illustrate. When does LIC Jeevan Umang pay for itself?
The grey line is what you have paid in by each policy year. The yellow line is what the policy has paid back by then. They cross in year 33, which is the point the policy has returned everything it cost.
That return counts everything the policy pays back, income included, against everything you put in, after the cost of the life cover it carried for 70 years. It is not a market return. Change the bonus rate and it changes with it.

These are the widest limits the plan allows. The range narrows once you choose a premium paying term, and the calculator applies whichever range fits your answers.

- Cover runs to age
- 100
The policy term follows from your age at entry, so there is nothing to choose.
Years you pay for
- Terms available
- 15, 20, 25 or 30 years
Sum assured
- Minimum
- ₹2,00,000
- Maximum
- No limit set by LIC
LIC caps this by what underwriting allows rather than with a printed figure. This calculator accepts up to ₹5 Crore.
The calculator applies every limit above. LIC sets them out under "Eligibility Conditions and Other Restrictions" on page 2 of the Jeevan Umang sales brochure, linked in the form above.
What age can you take LIC Jeevan Umang at?
The entry age depends on how long you pay for. A longer premium paying term is open to younger lives and closes earlier; a short one starts later and stays open to 55. These are the twelve rows LIC prints in its eligibility table.
| Premium paying term | Minimum age at entry | Maximum age at entry |
|---|---|---|
| 15 years | 30 days | 55 years |
| 20 years | 30 days | 50 years |
| 25 years | 30 days | 45 years |
| 30 years | 30 days | 40 years |
Minimum ages are completed years; maximum ages are nearer birthday. The calculator enforces these, so an age outside the range for your chosen premium term is rejected with the range that applies.
Surrender value, paid-up value and loan
A 70-year commitment is a long one, and the question that follows a premium quote is usually what happens if you stop. Under the IRDAI rules in force since 1 October 2024, Jeevan Umang can be surrendered once the first policy year is complete and one full year's premium has been paid. Stop before that and the policy lapses with nothing to show for it.
From then you are paid the higher of two figures. The special surrender value, what the reduced, paid-up policy is worth today rather than at maturity, is available from the end of the first year. The guaranteed surrender value needs two full years' premiums, and is a percentage of the total premiums paid, first year included: 30% in year 2, 35% in year 3, 50% from year 4 to year 7, then rising to 90% in the last two years. Which of the two comes out higher changes with duration, so the last column below is the one to read.
| Years paid | Total paid in | Guaranteed value | Special value | You would get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | ₹26,967 | ₹0 | ₹176 | ₹176 |
| 2 years | ₹53,934 | ₹16,180 | ₹382 | ₹16,180 |
| 3 years | ₹80,901 | ₹29,696 | ₹621 | ₹29,696 |
| 5 years | ₹1,34,836 | ₹69,718 | ₹1,219 | ₹69,718 |
| 10 years | ₹2,69,671 | ₹1,43,350 | ₹3,665 | ₹1,43,350 |
| 20 years | ₹5,39,343 | ₹3,12,798 | ₹16,572 | ₹3,12,798 |
On the ₹5,00,000 policy from the tables above, at age 30. Held to maturity the same policy is projected to pay ₹33,10,000, which is the number to read every row here against. Surrender values are modelled on the IRDAI 2024 basis, using the guaranteed surrender value grid printed in the New Jeevan Anand (715) brochure; a policy sold before 1 October 2024 runs on the older rules in its own document, and your own policy schedule is what governs.
Paid-up value: the other way to stop
You do not have to take the money out. Stop paying after at least one full year's premium and the policy continues at a reduced sum assured instead, keeping the cover and the bonuses already vested. The reduction is worked on the premium paying term, not the policy term, which is the point most calculators get wrong: on this policy the denominator is 20, so 10 years paid out of 20 leaves 50% of the sum assured standing, plus the bonus already vested.
Loan against the policy
Once the policy has a surrender value it can also be borrowed against, which is worth knowing before you surrender in a hurry. LIC lends a percentage of the surrender value rather than of the sum assured, and sets a different percentage for an in-force policy and a paid-up one. Those percentages sit in the policy conditions, so ask your servicing branch for the figure that applies to yours. On New Jeevan Anand (715), for example, the brochure allows 50% of the surrender value before two full years' premiums and 75% after, or 40% and 65% on a paid-up policy.
To run these figures on your own policy, use the LIC surrender value calculator, which takes the premium and the years paid off your own policy document. If you are weighing it up rather than pricing it, we have written about whether surrendering an LIC policy is worth it.
Tax on LIC Jeevan Umang
Two provisions do the work, and both turn on the size of the premium rather than on the plan. The Income-tax Act, 2025 renumbered both from 1 April 2026 without changing the rules, so each is given here under its old number and its new one.
Section 80C, now Section 123, on what you pay in
Premiums count towards the ₹1.5 lakh limit, in the year they are paid, if you are on the old regime. The deduction is restricted where the annual premium is more than 10% of the sum assured.
Section 10(10D), now Schedule II, on what comes back
Maturity proceeds are exempt where the premium in every year stays inside 10% of the sum assured, and, for a policy issued on or after 1 April 2023, where the premiums on all such policies together stay inside ₹5 lakh a year. Death proceeds are exempt either way.
Where this policy sits
The ₹5,00,000 policy priced above costs ₹26,967 a year, which is 5.4% of the sum assured. That is inside the 10% test, on both provisions. A larger sum assured moves the ratio down.
GST
Nil. Individual life insurance premiums have been exempt since 22 September 2025, so the instalment the calculator shows is the amount that leaves your account.
None of this is tax advice. Which regime you are on, what else you hold and when the policy was issued all change the answer, so confirm your own position with a tax adviser before you rely on it.
How this calculator works
Jeevan Umang is priced here on its own parameters, not a generic formula. We build the plan's full cash-flow schedule, meaning the death benefit in each policy year, every survival payout and the maturity value, then discount it on a basis calibrated to a reference premium for this plan. That reference is checked two ways: against LIC's published tabular rate, and against the return the plan's own benefits imply for the policyholder.
- Reference premium
- ₹57.03 per ₹1,000 at age 30, 70-year term, 20-year premium term
- Discount basis
- 5.73% a year, on LIC (2012-14) Ultimate mortality
- Reversionary bonus
- ₹46 per ₹1,000 sum assured a year, believed to be LIC's 2023-24 rate for this term; we have not found an LIC document that publishes it. Later declarations, which pay higher rates on larger sums assured, are not reflected, so the figure may be low.
- Final Additional Bonus
- ₹2400 per ₹1,000 at a 70-year term
- GST
- Nil. Individual life insurance premiums have been exempt from GST since 22 September 2025, so the instalments shown are what you actually pay.
Bonus rates are declared annually and are not guaranteed; only the sum assured and any contractual guaranteed additions are. Read our editorial and methodology policyfor the full basis, and confirm every figure with LIC before you buy.

What this premium does not include
The figure above is the premium for the base policy. LIC allows 4 optional riders on Jeevan Umang, each a separate contract with its own sum assured, term and premium. Take one and you pay more than the figure above, and the base premium itself does not change.
- LIC's Accidental Death and Disability Benefit RiderUIN not printed in the brochure
- LIC's Accident Benefit RiderUIN not printed in the brochure
- LIC's New Term Assurance RiderUIN not printed in the brochure
- LIC's Premium Waiver Benefit RiderUIN not printed in the brochure
Premiums for all the life insurance riders put together cannot exceed 30% of the premium under the base plan. That cap is the useful number to hold an agent to: whatever riders are proposed, the total should stay inside it.

LIC Jeevan Umang: frequently asked questions
How does the 8% survival benefit in Jeevan Umang work?
Once the premium paying term ends, the policy pays 8% of the Basic Sum Assured every year until age 99. On a ₹10 lakh sum assured that is ₹80,000 a year, and it continues for as long as the life assured lives.
Is Jeevan Umang's 8% an 8% return?
No. It is 8% of the sum assured, not 8% on the premiums paid. Because the premiums over 20 years typically add up to more than the sum assured, the effective yield is materially lower than 8%. Use the total returns and total premium figures in the result to see the real picture.
What is the maturity age of Jeevan Umang?
100 years. On survival to 100 the policy pays the Basic Sum Assured plus all vested bonuses and Final Additional Bonus. On earlier death, the death benefit is paid and the policy ends.
What premium paying terms are available in Jeevan Umang?
15, 20, 25 or 30 years. The maximum entry age depends on the term chosen: 55 for a 15-year premium term, down to 40 for a 30-year term.
Is the Jeevan Umang survival benefit taxable?
Survival benefits are exempt under Section 10(10D) (Schedule II of the Income-tax Act, 2025) provided the annual premium stays within 10% of the sum assured, and for policies issued on or after 1 April 2023, provided total annual premiums across non-ULIP policies stay within ₹5 lakh.
Which premium paying term should I choose for Jeevan Umang?
The one that matches when you want the income to start, not the one with the lowest annual premium. A 15-year term costs more a year but starts paying sooner and, over the whole 100-year term, pays out more income in total, because it is funding more years of it. A 30-year term costs less a year, starts later and pays out less overall. Neither is the cheap option; they are different schedules for the same 8%. If the appeal is the guaranteed income rather than this specific plan, Jeevan Utsav pays a higher 10% and can start sooner from a shorter premium term, and Jeevan Akshay-VII buys the same kind of lifelong income with a single lump sum and no premium term to choose at all.
